The new Hollywood Branch Library is located
on a heavily wooded site in a predominantly residential neighborhood environment.
The site faces south directly onto a major east/west thoroughfare. It
abuts single-family residential property to the north and west, as well
as an office park and parking to the east. We designed a 20,000 sf, single
story, public building which can successfully “bridge” the
gap between its two neighbors. The building is place along the longitudinal
north-south axis of the site, and strategically located to preserve the
greatest number of large trees possible. The two primary public spaces
in the building, adult and youth services reading rooms, have been positioned
to deliver the greatest possible visual access to the surrounding landscaped
environment.
The Broward Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded the
Hollywood Branch Library with the Unbuilt Institutional Project Award
in 2000.
