The program requirements for the Concourse E Terminal was to create a free-standing (satellite) international arrivals terminal, able to accommodate the first 747 jumbo jets to be placed into commercial operation. Twenty–five years later, the “satellite” continues to serve as a key element of MIA’s International passenger processing system to meet MIA’s unprecedented growth as an international hub airport.

Twin 14,000 sf departure lounges, each serving 6 aircraft gates, rely on a long span double-tee roof structure with integral A/C and lighting systems to achieve an open, column free environment. The white ceiling and wall treatments, contrasted with a vibrant plum colored carpet, custom seating, wood accents, and tropical landscape material create a lush interior that reflects South Florida’s unique subtropical environment.

Adjacent to the Terminal, MCHarry also designed and built the Central Energy Plant with a 6,000-ton chiller capacity. This section of the project won the Florida Engineering Society Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement.
