The Town of Miami Lakes has, for many years, been committed to improving and expanding the public park amenities available to its residents. In keeping with this commitment, the Town of Miami Lakes engaged the services of MCHarry Associates to analyze the feasibility and implications of expanding the facilities at Park East in a fashion which will compliment the Town’s consolidated recreation program, taking into account the Park’s inherent limitations, community expectations regarding development impact on the park, land use and building code constraints, and compatibility with the surrounding neighborhood.

Current facilities at Park East include a 969sf one story park administration building with limited toilet rooms; an open air playground with fabric canopy; a picnic pavilion; a skate park facility; and a surface parking lot accommodating 18 cars.

It is important to note that portions of the 2.13 acre Park East property are heavily wooded. In the course of identifying viable alternatives to developing the park, these trees and the inherent difficulties of tree removal and mitigation were taken into account. Accordingly, the master plan alternatives, principally organized around expanded surface parking to service a new, preferably one story, building solution, were configured to minimize impact on the park’s tree population. The 6,000sf youth center program was judged to be most responsive to the collective interests for overall park development.
